Its been a long time since I wrote the last blog, probably based on facts of Earthquakes. This time I would like my knowledge on a more broader aspect as in between, I received expertise on different fields of Civil engineering. It includes the contractor industry, both technical and managerial. I have known people from the design industry, preferably, the consultancies and the big daddies of my engineering, the developers.
I have been through the length and breath of my country, met various people and different backgrounds, working at different locations. Each of them had one thing in common, to earn money as well as become expert in the work they do. Among all, the group of people which caught my attention the most is lower level, i.e. the workmen of our industry. In all other industries, workmen does not hold such a important like they do in our field. They are the backbone of each and every step. Our work for any project starts from the developer, when he or she or the group of people, gets an idea to create something new. After all the negotiations, it passes to the major contractors, who ultimately pass it to the sub contractors. These subcontractors are expert at hands on experience of work at site . They have workmen, expert in actually building the structure. Now, can anyone assure that the workmen having no such degree(probably) in this field, can create a structure so good, so stable and so good looking that people can actually stay their with their families (in case of residential buildings) or work there or start new business(in commercial buildings). Leave all these, can anyone guess, who guides them to learn how to become expertise without any degree in civil engineering.
We blindly depend on the workmen. Be it anywhere in the World, how much great and good looking we make designs and invest on them, the end product is what matters. The skilled workmen are decreasing slowly and steadily. We require people to join form different towns and villages, give them minimum facilities and enrich them with the new aspects of our field. There are industries who provide facilities to the workmen working under them, but it should be mandatory to each and every industry from our field. Everyday, something is new us. They are the foundation to the civil engineering and to the society at large. So to cope up with the change we need our foundation strong and reliable. How much we try to make structures safe from natural disasters like earthquakes and landslides, etc. if our workmen are not in sync with us, then there is no use of such knowledge and expertise.
Imagine the day when our foundation becomes strong enough to hold any force of nature on Earth. I believe, the idea is already spreading fast in many countries. Then only we can think of building structures on other planets because each and every planet quakes.
